The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has seized 32 internet domains linked to a Russian disinformation campaign that used artificial intelligence and fake influencers to mislead American citizens ahead of the 2024 elections.

The operation, named “Doppelganger,” involved Russian entities using cybersquatting tactics to impersonate legitimate websites and spread disinformation.

“Today’s announcement exposes the scope of the Russian government’s influence operations and their reliance on cutting-edge AI to sow disinformation,” FBI Director Christopher Wray said.

He emphasised that companies acting under the Russian government's direction created websites to "trick Americans into unwittingly consuming Russian propaganda."

The campaign employed AI-generated content, fake social media profiles, and paid advertisements to drive traffic to these misleading sites.

According to the DOJ, Doppelganger used influencers worldwide and AI tools to create social media ads and profiles posing as U.S. citizens.

“Today’s announcement reveals Russia is willing to impersonate our free and open press in its egregious schemes,” an official added.

One such fake site was designed to look like The Washington Post but contained articles critical of U.S. policies.

In conjunction with the DOJ's announcement, the U.S. Department of the Treasury identified two companies and ten individuals involved in the campaign, including executives from Russia Today (RT) and members of the pro-Kremlin hacktivist group RaHDit.

These actors used AI-generated deepfakes and other tools to influence voters.

“Treasury will not waver in our commitment to safeguarding our democratic principles and the integrity of our election systems,” stated Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen.

The U.S. government is intensifying its efforts to counter state-sponsored actors who undermine democratic institutions.

As part of these efforts, the DOJ recently flagged nearly 1,000 Twitter accounts tied to Russian bots that used AI to create fake profiles and spread pro-Russian messages.
