Last weekend, French authorities detained Pavel Durov, the CEO and founder of Telegram, at Le Bourget Airport, leading to widespread international concern.

The detention has drawn sharp criticism from various quarters, including the TON Society and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), both of which have demanded Durov's immediate release, citing his critical role in advocating for freedom of expression and user privacy.

The TON Society, representing the community behind The Open Network (CRYPTO:TON), condemned the arrest as a violation of fundamental human rights and a threat to online privacy.

They urged global institutions like the United Nations and the European Union to intervene and challenge France's actions.

The UAE’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs also expressed its concerns, stressing the need for urgent consular support for Durov, who holds Emirati citizenship.

French authorities have accused Durov of serious crimes, including conspiracy in illegal transactions and cybercrimes.

However, many industry leaders and privacy advocates view these allegations with skepticism, suggesting they could be a pretext to undermine encrypted communication and user privacy.

Critics argue that Durov’s arrest could set a dangerous precedent for the future of online privacy and encrypted technologies.

In response to the backlash, French President Emmanuel Macron stated that the arrest was part of an ongoing judicial investigation and not politically motivated.

Despite these assurances, the incident has intensified discussions about the need for decentralised technologies to resist governmental pressures.

The arrest has also sparked increased interest in the TON blockchain and the broader Telegram ecosystem, with some industry leaders predicting that this situation could ultimately strengthen the resolve to advance decentralised solutions.

As international pressure mounts, the future of Durov’s case remains uncertain, with growing calls for his release and concerns over the implications for privacy and free communication.

At the time of writing, the Toncoin price was $5.34.
