Data Interpretation Farcaster: Users post across 8 channels on average, and many crypto-native channels have developed sub-communities

We've seen an interesting phenomenon taking shape over the past few weeks. Channels on Farcaster have become hubs for grassroots community formation. Over 43% of Farcaster account holders have never cast before (similar to a tweet or Reddit post). But of those who have cast, nearly 70% did so in a channel. This week I dug into the public cast data on channels and their usage to see what the data would tell us.

The average number of channels a Farcaster user posts in is about 8!

While this number is obviously influenced by upper-tier users (like the @degentokenbase bot that has replied to over 2,000 channels), it's still a pretty large number for the average!

Looking at it in more detail, I listed the top 15 channels by number of followers and found that 7 of them are "crypto-native" or have some relationship to Farcaster, and the other 8 are general purpose non-crypto channels.

For those who post to multiple channels over time, what is the overlap between channel usage?

A few things stand out. First, there are four core channels (base, degen, farcaster, and frames) with a large number of users posting in several of them. On the other hand, there are some extremely unrelated non-crypto channels such as tabletop (for board game players) and front-end with their own sub-communities.

If an average user posts on 8 channels, how is it actually distributed? Segmenting by the number of channels a user posts on shows this distribution:

Understandably, choosing which channels to post on is a pretty difficult choice with such a large list of choices, so choosing 2-4 channels to post on is a good bet. It's like a buffet menu at a restaurant, you end up choosing the same few dishes over and over again out of habit and comfort.

What is interesting, however:

· 21% of users do not post on the channel at all (most are first-time posters)

· Nearly the same number (19%) are prolific channel users, posting in 10 or more channels

So which channels get the most attention?

As we saw before, one way to segment channels is to distinguish between "crypto-native" channels and more general channels, as shown below on the right side clustering.

As an emerging feature of crypto-native channels on Farcaster, it’s exciting to see them organically develop highly engaged sub-communities. From large channels like degen  and nouns to several smaller channels that have sprung up in the past few weeks, higher, sendit, and the infamous ticker , many channels have a eponymous meme coin or NFT family to unite .

While it’s difficult to see a general non-crypto channel like founders or front-ends uniting around a coin, it is possible to see every crypto on the network Native channels all have the possibility of having some type of token or on-chain asset associated with them.

Reddit, Farcaster, and the Road Ahead

Last week, 19 years after its founding, Reddit , had millions of users and posts, and IPOed at a valuation of $7 billion. For a certain segment of the internet, Reddit is their de facto "home page of the internet," a central hub for all kinds of content, including news, discussion, opinion, and entertainment, all provided and curated by its users. The similarities between Reddit and Farcaster have been well documented.

How do Reddit subforums compare to the Farcaster topic space?

With the exception of funny, which ranks above all other subforums, you can see a wide range of general topics, all of which have between 20 million and 30 million subscribers, many of whom were automatically subscribed when they joined Reddit .

When first launched last year, channels on Farcaster were initially described as "decentralized sub-forums". For those starting out with Farcaster, the entire platform will look and feel like one large cryptocurrency subforum. However, as the web grows, it's interesting to see the growth of new channels, both on "crypto-native" topics and on decidedly more general topics.

There are over 100,000 subforums and close to 5,000 channels on Farcaster, and some topics (such as memes) have large communities on both.

As Farcaster matures, the selection of well-balanced clients (not just Warpcast) continues to grow, which we will be happy to see Which approach will be more dominant: a specialized, cryptocurrency-native sub-community network or a Reddit-like general network with broader appeal.

Channels, including how they are managed and the communities that form around them, will play a key role in shaping the future direction and identity of the web. As users continue to switch between channels, they will collectively determine the types of communities and conversations that define the Farcaster experience.
